Overview

How microdermabrasion works

Microdermabrasion works by physically buffing away the outermost layer of dead skin cells. Treatments typically use either a fine abrasive tip or a stream of fine crystals, combined with gentle suction that lifts away the loosened cells. The depth is controlled by the pressure, speed and number of passes, which lets the treatment be adjusted for different skin types.

Because it only works on the surface, microdermabrasion is gentler than chemical peels or resurfacing lasers. It is best thought of as a deep professional exfoliation. Many people find their skin feels smoother immediately, and a series of treatments spaced a few weeks apart is common for people who want an ongoing result. Results vary from person to person.

Treatment benefits

Why clients choose microdermabrasion with us

  1. 01

    Smoother-feeling skin

Removing built-up dead skin cells can make the surface feel noticeably smoother and softer straight after treatment.

  2. 02

    A brighter look

Fresh skin reflects light more evenly than a dull surface layer, which can help your complexion look brighter.

  3. 03

    Better base for skincare

With the dead layer cleared, moisturisers and serums can spread more evenly across the skin.

  4. 04

    Back to your day

Most people have only mild redness that settles quickly, so you can usually go back to your normal day afterwards.

How it works

What happens at your appointment

Treatment consultation between a practitioner and a client
  1. Step 01

    Skin assessment

We check your skin and ask about active skincare, recent treatments and sensitivities, then decide how much exfoliation is appropriate.

  2. Step 02

    Cleanse

Your skin is cleansed so the treatment works on a clean surface free of make-up and oil.

  3. Step 03

    Exfoliation

A handpiece is passed over the skin in controlled strokes to buff away dead cells, usually with gentle suction to lift debris. It often feels like a light scratching or vibrating sensation.

  4. Step 04

    Soothe and protect

The skin is cleansed again and finished with a hydrating product and, for daytime appointments, sun protection.

What to expect

Microdermabrasion or dermaplaning?

Both treatments exfoliate, but they do it differently. Microdermabrasion buffs the skin with an abrasive surface and suction, while dermaplaning uses a fine blade to gently scrape away dead skin and fine facial hair. Dermaplaning suits people who also want to remove peach fuzz, while microdermabrasion suits those who want a buffing exfoliation without hair removal.

Neither is better for everyone, and the right choice depends on your skin and what you want to change. Our guide to dermaplaning vs microdermabrasion compares them side by side, and we are happy to recommend one at your appointment.

Aftercare and timing with other treatments

Freshly exfoliated skin is more sensitive to the sun, so sunscreen is important for the days after treatment. Avoid scrubs, exfoliating acids and retinoids for a few days, and keep your routine to a gentle cleanser and moisturiser while the skin settles.

If you are also having laser hair removal on the face, let us know so we can space the treatments sensibly. Exfoliation right before or after laser can make the skin more reactive. The same applies to peels, waxing and other facial treatments.

Does microdermabrasion hurt?

Most people find microdermabrasion comfortable. It usually feels like a light scratching or vibrating sensation, with a gentle pulling from the suction. We adjust the intensity if an area feels too sensitive.

Is there downtime after microdermabrasion?

Downtime is usually minimal. Skin may look pink or feel slightly tight for a few hours, similar to mild windburn. Most people go straight back to their normal day.

How often can I have microdermabrasion?

Many people have treatments a few weeks apart, allowing the skin time to recover between sessions. How often depends on your skin and how it responds. We will suggest a schedule after your first treatment.

Can microdermabrasion remove acne scars or pigmentation?

Microdermabrasion is a surface exfoliation, so it can help skin look smoother and more even, but it is not a treatment for scarring or pigmentation conditions. For those concerns, please speak with your GP or a dermatologist. We can talk through what exfoliation can and cannot do.

Can I wear make-up after microdermabrasion?

It is best to wait until the next day if you can, so the freshly exfoliated skin can settle. If you need to, use light products and clean brushes. Always apply sunscreen before going outside.
