Laser hair removal for men: a practical guide

Back, chest, shoulders, neck and beard lines: what men should know about laser hair removal before booking.

4 min read · Updated

The short answer

  • Laser hair removal is designed to reduce unwanted hair for men as well as women, and it suits many common male areas.
  • Back, shoulders, chest, stomach, neck and beard lines are among the most popular areas for men.
  • Male hair is often denser and more hormonally driven, so some areas may need more sessions than you expect.
  • Beard areas need extra thought: laser reduces hair, so talk to your specialist about shaping before treating the face.

Is laser hair removal a good option for men?

Yes, laser hair removal is a practical option for many men who are tired of shaving, trimming or waxing. It is designed to reduce unwanted hair over a course of sessions, and men often have the dark, coarse hair that tends to respond well to laser.

The reasons vary. Some men want a cleaner back and shoulders, some want less time shaving the neck, some are athletes or gym-goers who prefer less body hair, and some want relief from ingrown hairs and razor irritation on the neck. Whatever the reason, the process is the same: a consultation, a patch test in most cases, and a course of sessions.

The most common areas for men

The most requested areas for men are the back, shoulders and neck, followed by the chest and stomach. These are areas that are hard to maintain by yourself and where hair is often dense.

  • Back and shoulders, including the upper and lower back
  • Back of the neck and nape, for a cleaner line between haircuts
  • Chest and stomach, full or partial
  • Beard line: cheeks and neck, to define the edges of a beard
  • Arms, underarms and legs

How it feels and how many sessions to expect

Most people describe laser as a quick snap or a warm flick against the skin. Areas with dense, coarse hair, like the back or chest, can feel more intense early in a course because there is more pigment absorbing energy. It usually becomes more comfortable as hair thins out.

Men often need a similar or slightly longer course than women for the same area, because male hair tends to be thicker and more influenced by testosterone. As a general industry range, many people need somewhere around 6 to 10 sessions, spaced typically 4 to 8 weeks apart, but results vary. Our article on how many sessions you need goes into more detail.

A note on beards and facial hair

Think carefully before treating the face, because laser reduces hair and you may not be able to get it back the way it was. For many men, the best use of laser on the face is shaping: cleaning up the cheeks above a beard line, or the neck below it, rather than treating the whole beard area.

Talk through the exact lines you want with your specialist first. If you grow your beard out or change styles often, it is worth leaving extra room. The neck is a common choice for men who get ingrown hairs or rash from shaving.

The same caution applies to chest and stomach hair if you are unsure. Some men prefer a lighter reduction rather than a full course, so say so at your consultation and your specialist can plan around it.

How to prepare

Preparation for men is the same as for anyone else. Shave the area the day before or the morning of your session, don’t wax or pluck, and keep the area out of the sun. For the back, it helps to have someone shave it for you, or let the clinic know if you can’t reach it.

Tell your specialist about any medications, skin conditions or tattoos in the area. Tattooed skin is avoided during treatment. For the full list, see our before and aftercare checklist.

  • Shave the area 12 to 24 hours before
  • No waxing, plucking or epilating for about four weeks beforehand
  • No sun, solarium or fake tan on the area
  • Skip heavy training, saunas and pools for 24 to 48 hours afterwards

Questions

Is back laser for men a long appointment?

The back is one of the larger areas, so it takes longer than small areas like the neck. Your specialist can give you an idea of timing at your consultation.

Can laser help with ingrown hairs on the neck?

Many men find that reducing hair on the neck means less shaving and fewer ingrown hairs, although results vary. Talk to your specialist about your skin first.

Will hair come back thicker?

Laser is designed to reduce hair, not thicken it. Treated hair usually grows back finer and sparser over a course, though results vary between people.
