The short answer
- Most people need a course of sessions because hair grows in cycles and laser only affects hairs in the active growth phase.
- As a general industry range, many people need somewhere around 6 to 10 sessions, but the right number varies from person to person.
- Sessions are typically spaced around 4 to 8 weeks apart, depending on the area.
- Hair colour, skin tone, the area and hormones all change how many sessions you need. Your specialist will recommend a plan.
Why one session is never enough
You need several sessions because each one only reaches the hairs that are actively growing at that moment. Every hair follicle cycles through three broad stages: a growth phase (anagen), a short transition phase (catagen) and a resting phase (telogen). At any given time, only a portion of the hairs in an area are in the growth phase.
Laser works by targeting the pigment in a growing hair, which carries the light down into the follicle as heat. Hairs in the resting phase are either not attached to the follicle in the same way or not present at all, so they are not affected. They move into the growth phase later, which is why you come back for the next session a few weeks on.
This is also why the first few sessions can feel slow. Many people notice patchy regrowth and some shedding after the first one or two visits, with more obvious thinning as the course goes on.
The typical range, and why it varies
As a general industry range, many people need somewhere around 6 to 10 sessions for an area, but that is a range, not a promise. Some people see the reduction they want in fewer sessions, and some need more. A few will also want occasional maintenance sessions later on.
The biggest factors are the contrast between your hair and skin, the thickness of the hair, and the area being treated. Dark, coarse hair on lighter skin tends to respond well. Fine hair, lighter hair and hormonally driven areas usually take longer. Very light, grey, white or red hair usually responds poorly, because it has little pigment for the laser to target.
- Hair colour and thickness
- Skin tone, which guides the settings your specialist can use
- The treatment area, as some areas have more active follicles than others
- Hormones, including conditions such as PCOS and life stages such as menopause
- Keeping to the recommended intervals between sessions
How far apart sessions should be
Sessions are typically spaced around 4 to 8 weeks apart, depending on the area. Areas with a faster hair cycle, like the face, are often treated closer together. Body areas with a slower cycle, such as the legs or back, are usually further apart.
Booking too early does not speed things up, because there may not be enough new hairs in the growth phase to treat. Leaving it too long can mean the timing drifts away from the hair cycle. Your specialist will recommend an interval for each area and may adjust it as your hair thins out.
If you are treating more than one area, it is common to line them up so you can do them in the same visit. We are open 7 days, 9am to 9pm, which makes it easier to keep to a regular schedule.
What you can do to get the most from each session
Consistent preparation helps every session count. Shave rather than wax or pluck between visits, keep the area out of the sun and away from fake tan, and let your specialist know about any new medications. Our before and aftercare checklist covers every step.
- Shave the day before or the morning of each session
- Don’t wax, pluck, thread or epilate between sessions
- Wear SPF 50+ on exposed treated areas
- Keep to your recommended intervals
- Tell the clinic about changes in health or medication
Planning your course
The easiest way to understand how many sessions you are likely to need is a consultation. Your specialist looks at your skin and hair, asks about your health history, usually does a patch test and then recommends a plan for each area.

Questions
Can I see results after one session?
Some people notice shedding and a little less regrowth after the first session, but most need a full course to see a clear reduction. Results vary.
What happens if I miss a session?
Missing a session is not a disaster. Book in as soon as you can and let your specialist know, as they may adjust the timing of your next visits.
Will I need maintenance sessions?
Some people do. Hormonal changes and naturally dormant follicles can lead to new growth over time, so an occasional top-up session may be recommended.
